
KOMINFO and Meta Connectivity Develop Open Technology and Metaverse Ecosystem in Indonesia at World Mobile Congress 2022

In line with Telecom Infra Project (TIP) program that seeks to advance the digital and economic growth in Indonesia, a meeting was held between Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (KOMINFO) and Meta Connectivity at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2022 on Wednesday (1/3) in Barcelona, Spain.
The meeting was attended by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MENKOMINFO) Johnny G Plate, Director General of Resources, Postal and Information Technology Dr. Ismail, Indonesian Ambassador to Spain Dr. Muhammad Najib, and Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Global Vishal Mathur.
Menkominfo, Johnny G Plate said that the main focus of the Ministry at this time is the affordability of access to communication is the key to Indonesia’s future economic development.
Currently, The Indonesian economic is supported by 60% of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and the affordability and access to connectivity to expand connectivity are the key to sustaining and developing Indonesian further economy.
In addition, Johnny G Plate also said that the importance of developing digital talent for Indonesia who will become one of the pillars in preparing Indonesia to become a developed country.
US State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary, Stephen Anderson express his support to assist the broadband handling for remote area in Indonesia.
“The US is interested in handling broadband for underserved areas in rural areas of Indonesia. In addition, we can also help with investment and US ecosystem support through several state, NTIA, USAID and support local hardware assembly”, Stephen Anderson said.
USAID officer, Kate Dimsdale added her support to KOMINFO, TIP, and Telkom University for the development of digital talent in Indonesia.
“We are happy to support KOMINFO, TIP dan Telkom University in terms of developing training and certification program to prepare digital talent in Indonesia, Kate Dimsdale said.
Director of Operation Telecom Infra Project, Rocky Bullock also said that Telkom university will develop training and certification programs in preparing digital talent.
VP Meta Connectivity, Dan R express his support and openness to collaborate in product creation and metaverse development in Indonesia.
“right now, what we need is open innovative research and innovative engineering. Meta is ready and open to collaborate and act more in Indonesia. As an initial involvement form of Meta is the collaboration with Telkom University and National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in making product and developing metaverse, namely Nusantaraverse, which is considered as a good first step.
Dan R also added that local manufacturing for OpenRAN dan OpenWifi are important in developing ecosystem in Indonesia. Meta wants to support this collaboration and works hand in and with the government. Meta has a blue print called Evenstar that can be used as a reference for establishing local manufacturing.
Rector of Telkom University (Tel-U), Prof. Dr. Adiwijaya said that cooperation between Telkom University and BRIN is a proof that Telkom University also focus on technology development including Metaverse.
“Tel-U is currently collaborating with BRIN to develop metaverse product and usecases such as AR/VR innovation, 3D hologram product, 360 videos, and other metaverse based products in education and tourism. This is the proof that Tel-U focus on technology development including metaverse. We believe that this is the time for us to work together and hand in hand between Meta, Telkom, and local industry to ensure that the benefits of the metaverse will be immediately felt by everyone.” Adiwijaya said.
Besides meeting with the USA, Meta Connectivity, and TIP, at the same event was held an MoU between Telkom University and TIP Academy which focuses in strategic collaboration to develop digital talent in Indonesia and Southeast Asia regio. The Signing of MoU was witnessed directly by The Minister of Communication and Information Technology (Menkominfo) Johnny G Plate, Director General of KOMINFO Dr. Ismail, and Indonesian Ambassador to Spain Dr. Muhammad Najib.
