
The Benefit of Open RAN in Indonesia

In the third session of the webinar, Mr. Yudha Febrianta as the Coordinator of Telecom Infra Project Community Lab at Telkom University started the explanation by the election of Telkom University as the first Telecom Infra Project Community Lab in Southeast Asia and the 14th Community Lab in the globe. This opportunity also in line with vision and mission of Telkom University to become a research and entrepreneurial university in 2023 which plays an active role in the development of technology, science, and art based on information technology.
Worldwide, there are 14 TIP Community Labs including the lab in Telkom University. The others are in United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Japan, and India. TIP Community Lab consist of various institutions worldwide that work together as a community to develop the telecommunication infrastructure and deploy it including the Open RAN. TIP Community Lab in Indonesia itself was officially inaugurated by Minister of Communication and Information Technology of Republic Indonesia, Mr. Johnny G. Plate in Late 2020.
Collaboration on Open RAN
TIP Community Labs works in collaboration and partnership scheme to discover a better technology in telecommunication, currently in Open RAN. As explained by Mr. Yudha that the collaboration in Open RAN will improve the connectivity in Indonesia, which will drive the economic growth of Republic Indonesia later. Indonesia has approximately 270 million population and 170 million active internet users which live in both urban and rural area, these huge population create a high demand for good connectivity as the digital technology already adopted in economic transaction in Indonesia. The great demand will increasing and keep growing as the population growth. According to Mr. Yudha there are 7000 spots located in remote area will be connected using Open RAN in Indonesia.
Open RAN was selected as there are a lot of benefits by deploying this technology, the main reason is the cost efficiency because it could reduce CAPEX and OPEX, improve network performance in many scenarios for both urban and rural area Mr. Yudha said. He also adds an invitation to the whole stakeholders from government, industry, universities, vendors, system integrators, Individual, and startups to build AI, Learning Management System, Machine Learning Apps within the Open RAN network.
